Amazon.com Product Description

The high-performance HDTVa amplified indoor HDTV antenna from Terk Technologies is designed to capture both UHF and VHF signals (channels 2 to 69) while extending the reception range for all local HDTV broadcasts. The HDTVa uses an ultra-low-noise, high-gain amplifier with Terk's exclusive Dual-Drive Amplifier technology for clear reception of both distant and close HDTV and DTV stations.
As suitable for those living in city apartments as for those in suburban homes, the compact HDTVa lets viewers experience HDTV broadcasts in full resolution. Designed for total reception versatility, the HDTVa's high-gain antenna array can be oriented either horizontally or vertically within its mounting base to achieve optimum capture of off-air broadcasts.
Set the amplifier to high-gain mode to compensate for signals that are too weak or might otherwise be bypassed for a stronger signals nearby. Simplifying your installation, the HDTVa uses Terk's Power Injector to derive power via its coaxial connecting cable. The result? One cable is all you have to connect, making it easy to install the HDTVa atop or near your television.
The antenna is engineered to receive all local HDTV channels, with an operating bandwidth covering both the UHF (channels 2 to 13) and VHF (channels 14 to 69) frequency ranges. Its highly directional log periodic UHF and precision VHF elements are designed to receive HDTV broadcasts with maximum signal strength while rejecting all or most interference. The HDTVa is as exceptional in appearance as it is in performance: its curved, tapering, polished-aluminum antenna elements are mounted in a slim base with a contoured front that visually complements the curve of the antenna elements.

"Dissatisfied with Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified Antenna" 2010-03-29

I am dissatified with the Terk HDTV Amplified High-Definition Antenna. I have returned the Antenna and I heard of no response.

"Pretty good" 2010-03-28
By Poor Person (NJ USA)
Some channels are good but uhf (cw and abc) are hard to get good reception for.

"The Antenna is... Meh, nothing special." 2010-03-26
By Jennifer Jennifer (Pittsburgh, PA)
I live on the 5th floor on an apartment building on the outskirts of a city. I bought this antenna hoping that it would solve our reception issues of having to move the bunny ears in a specific way for each channel. I have an HD TV, so I thought that I could do without the box and get the straight HD signal. I could... sort of. It was pretty bad, especially for channel 11 (NBC). I had to add the box back on and the reception got mostly better, but I had to sacrifice the awesome super-HD clarity. So, over all this antenna is OK.

"A bit picky on direction" 2010-03-24
By Scott Jensen (Minneapolis, MN)
Bought this to pick up over the air HD. The picture and audio is great as long as it's aimed the right way. It is a little touchy on the direction it is pointed. I could get most of the channels in my area aimed one direction, but needed to turn it to pick up others. I was never able to get all of the local channels using one position. Tried adjusting the fins but that only seemed to make it worse. Ended up picking up a used aerial antenna and mounting it in the rafters of the garage. That is working much better. When this antenna was "tuned in" to a signal it was great. I was able to get HD channels from over 50 miles away that I can't get with the aerial antenna. Just was too much of a hassle to turn it whenever I wanted to change channels. If you have most of your TV signals coming from the same direction, this would probably work for you. I just needed wider angle antenna for my area.

"Amazing Reception IN MY BASEMENT!!!" 2010-03-22
By Ryan J Moffitt (Utah!)
Once I overcame a small issue of user error (plugged the coax into the wrong jack on the back of the TV) I've had an amazing experience with this antenna. I live in West Jordan, UT and I'm 13.1 miles from the broadcast towers. I'm not sure if having the towers on a mountain helps but I've consistantly had 97+ signal strength tunning HD channels in my Basement. The TV is next to a wall without a window and I've run the cable into my basement pantry under the staircase. The antenna is facing the cement foundation of my basement so it would be in line with the broadcast towers and I'm still getting amazing reception! I've had the antenna fall over a few times and I still get signals. While I cannot guarentee you will have as much success as me if you install this antenna in your basement (the manufactures FAQ says you cannot install this in a basement), I want to put an opinion out there that if you are resonably close to your broadcast towers you should give this antenna a shot. The worst that could happen is you end up returning it to Amazon and getting your money back.

"Meh...it's not as Consistent as I would like.." 2010-03-06
By A. Young
I bought this [as suggested by amazon) along with the Zinwell ZAT-970A 'Digital to Analog Converter Box,' to put on my second elderly pre-digital TV (which has been only used for DVDs in recent months)...so that I could watch broadcast TV on either set. I thought I'd Git Real Bright and hook this Fancy New 'Amplified' Antenna to the oldest TV (a 1998 Philips-Magnavox model PR1905X101), which doesn't have DVD capabilities. And then I'd put my $5.99 old funky rabbit ears on the newer TV (a 2006 Polaroid TTM-2003) which also needs a Converter Box...'cause the Polaroid has a built-in DVD player, and so I wouldn't care if it didn't get so many channels with the old funky cheapo rabbit ears, eh. Well-then...I hooked up yon Fab New Antenna to the elderly Philips-Magnavox TV with a Magnavox converter box model E175216. And :::: no matter what I did, I could only get ONE CHANNEL and *IT* kept breaking up, hunh! This caused me to become Quite Peevish, and I was fixin' to return this-here antenna with a Bitter Complaint. So I put the cheapo rabbit ears back on the 1998 set (with the same Philips-Magnavox converter box it had been usin'....where it gets, like 3-and-a-half channels, even though I only live two miles from the TV towers in a major metropolitan area, eh). But before returning it, I said, wot-th-heck...I'll try this antenna on the Zinwell converter and the newer Polaroid set. Bingo! Works dandy. What I'm gettin' at here :::: is mebbe this antenna will work with YOUR converter box and TV combo....and mebbe it WON'T. Caveat emptor.

"Junk is too kind a word for this." 2010-01-12
By M. Swenson (TX USA)
Sorry, I have no idea if this item works or not. There was NO analog-to-digital converter box or television set that we could hook this antenna to... Since the cable is hardwired to the antenna we did not have the option of grabbing a different RF cable and trying that one. No, we were locked into using the hardwired cable whose connector would not match up to ANY other connector we tried. This antenna was sold bundled with the Zinwell analog-to-digital converter box, but I know no one checked to see that you could actually use the two pieces together. After 1 hour of fruitless attempts to attach the antenna to ANY other television or converter box, we packed it back up and submitted it to return to Amazon.Based on my experience with this antenna, I would day to run very fast in the opposite direction if anyone ever offers you a piece of Tivax equipment.

"Rabbit ears better" 2010-01-07

I only get three of the four major networks with my Terk Technology TV-1 Passive Indoor TV Antenna so I thought I would give this a try. With the new one I only get two networks and nothing on the UHF side.

"Digital TV Antenna Junk" 2009-12-31
By Sharon D. Johnson
I don't like this Antenna it doesn't seen to do anything for my TV. I think that the Digital TV is the worse mistake they could have ever made. These Antenna are nothing but a waste of my money. They don't stop the TV's from Freezing Up, They don't stop the No Signal Thing, They don't bring in all the Channel's that they say will come in. Not worth the money nor the time fooling around with it either.

"Okey-Dokey...." 2009-10-12
By Y. Lee
This converter box has 1 of the best reception strengths out of all the several boxes that I've tried & doesn't get too hot even after a few hrs. of uses, but abt. half the time when it's first turned on, it somehow causes a handful of the pixels scattered throughout the screen(even though I keep my TV set's channel at 3 at all times....) to blink white.... (This phenomenon usually lessens or disappears within a half of an hr., but this is rather bothersome while it happens....)

"No more daily indoor antenna wrestling, but no additional stations." 2010-03-17
By Dean Morris (NY NY)
It's an expensive way to avoid improving the same old reception, but I reluctantly will keep it because I now have consistent reception; I had to change my ring and rabbit ear antenna daily. I wish I gained all the stations other reviewers gained; I got no new English-language channels in what I thought would be a crowded market: New York City.I have to turn it off to get a clear picture from the VCR.See my product photos. It's very easy to hide; I had to rearrange things so you could actually see it.

"not an improvement over rabbit ears" 2010-03-15
By JMHouston
Had high hopes for this device after reading the reviews here, but sadly discovered that its reception-- at least in my location-- wasn't an improvement over regular ol' rabbit ears (which don't need an ac plug or batteries to operate).

"Power Que" 2010-03-14
By Max D. Webster (USA)
It works as a digital antena however it is very position dependent. It has replaced my rabbit ears but the only advantage is space conservation.

"Very Pleased" 2010-02-28
By Christopher A. Henderson (Suffolk, VA)
I purchased this antenna based on the positive reviews and I'm happy to report that it works as advertised. When I opened up the package I was surprised to see its small size. I've tried two other antennas and this beat them hands down. I picked up additonal channels (21) total. Five more than the other antennas. All come in crystal clear. It was a bit more pricey than the others but I get more channels and better quality pictures. PowerQ POWERHD-100 Indoor Portable Pop-Up Digital HDTV Antenna - Get FREE TV Broadcasts!

So easy to use, perfect signal. Living in an apartment and getting 22 great channels, most HD!Only down faults, short cords. I agree with this major issue with other reviews, but longer cords are easily bought for very, very cheap!

"OK, but there are better, cheaper ones." 2010-03-13
By John S. Socha (Spring Grove, MN, US)
I used this antenna for reception from about 35 miles from the source. It worked, but did require repositioning. Then I bought an non-powered Artec AN1 for use with a laptop (with a TV card) and decided to try it on my TV out of curiosity. It outperformed the GE hands-down. It pulled in more stations and required much less repositioning. The Artec uses no power and looks a bit like a plastic fly swatter. Check one out before you buy this unit. It is less money, smaller, and worked better for me.

"Strong enough to power 3 TV's in different rooms" 2010-02-07
By Ed Hong (Irvine, CA USA)
My parents were spending $80/month for cable tv service just to get korean channels. So I told them to go to the store and get an indoor antenna and digital converter box. The sales rep sold them 3 each of this GE 24775 indoor antenna and a RCA converter box for all the rooms they wanted TV in. Well the first thing I did when I went to do the install was try the setup on a TV to make sure it works. Sure enough, it found 80+ channels and the quality was quite good. More surprisingly, they now had more Korean channels then before when they were paying $80+ for cable. Then the geek in me wanted to see if I could network the antenna signal throughout the house by plugging it into the main hub. Their house is fairly new so it is wired for internet and tv in all rooms which is routed to one central location in the house. To my surprise, one of these GE 24775 antennas were strong enough to get great signal and quality on 3 tv's at the same time, all in different rooms of a two story, 3100sq.ft house. Wow! I will point out however that I had an amplified cable splitter (one-to-three) so that may have increased signal enough to be split so far. The amplified splitters are $10-$20 at most so that's an easy investment to make. Each TV would still need the converter box next to the TV to change channels, but luckily 2 out of the 3 tv's my parents have are fairly new so they didn't need the converter boxes. So 2 antennas and 2 receivers would go right back to the store for a return saving them over $100.The moral of the story is that this antenna signal is quite strong in our geographic location (even inside a 2-story house closet) and with a little extra know-how and time, you can save some money while getting what you want accomplished. I'm sure there are a lot of houses out there that are told to buy unnecessary equipment when there is a simpler solution, like what I've described above!

"this sucked" 2009-12-22

This antenna had NO digital reception for my new HDTV. It got less channels than my old rabbit ears which I went back to. I am highly disappointed.

"Keep YOUR RECEIPT!" 2009-12-03
By J. Bryson (Denver)
We bought this Amplified Quantum Antenna from Target almost 5 months ago and the amplified part no longer works. The antenna now only works similarly to rabbit ears antenna, but it no longer makes a difference if it is plugged in or not and we have lost most of our basic channels (NBC, ABC, WB, CBS). All that works are PBS channels and even then they only SOMETIMES work. Make sure to keep a receipt because you will need it to use the 1 yr warranty.

"Junk" 2009-09-19

"Failed in short amount of time" 2010-01-16
By Edna (Saint Paul, MN)
Based on some initial reviews we purchased these converter boxes. One failed in 6 months the other failed in just over a year. Would not purchase this product again.

"Good while it lasts" 2009-12-16
By J. Hahn
Bought this product from radioshack in 2008 with our coupon. It worked well, though it did get hot at times. Started noticing a couple of months ago that some channels were not coming in a clear as they used to so we bought a stronger antenna which seemed to have fixed the problem. For the past month or so the converter box died a slow death. It would attempt to start up (light turning a pale green)and wouldn't recieve any channels. We would give it a couple of seconds turn it off and then back on again and it would work fine. Well this week when we turned on the power it would just constantly blink green without any reception whatsoever. Producted lasted about a year..not worth the additional money we forked over to Radioshack in 2008.

Purchased two of these. After one year, one is still working, and one has failed.

"Bad as the box is, customer service is even worse." 2009-09-09
By Littlebird (Arizona)
Piece of trash. Never worked properly, finally gave up the ghost just after the warranty period ended. But what they use as customer service was beyond awful. According to them it was really MY fault it stopped working. Would give both product and company "no star" if that was an option.

"Regretting purchase" 2010-02-10
By Lori Privitt
So far the Access converter is totally useless. Haven't been able to find antena which picks up any signal at all (according to the converter) and I have purchased several locally and have been told these are recommended for my area. Have tried many times to contact Access customer sevice in an attempt to get their recommendation for antena or info as to if problem is with converter. Only response from them is an automated system which eventually tells me to call back. Have even tried to contact them via internet. Saving a few bucks buying via the web isn't such a good deal if there is no support from seller. Luckly I just wasted a few dollars! Beware.

"Great Value" 2010-03-16

This Digital to Analog Conversion box works just fine. You do need to plug an antenna into it and with my usual bunny ears I picked up more channels than I ever did without digital.

Magnavoix makes a very user friendly box.My customers found the reception to be good to excellent. The remote was easy to understand. You may have to program again if you do not have a good antenns, but with a good location, picks them all up nicely.

"good product and price" 2010-03-14
By Lee Lakes (Indianapolis, IN)
The Mag TB110MW9 converter works well especially for the price. I use it with an HD antennae in my basement. Not a lot of channels come in since the antennae is in the basement but serves the purpose while i work out. i assume it would be even better if i had a better antennae setup. it was worth the $ for me.

Good, fast service. The box works as good as expected being what it is. It's much cheaper than satellite or cable service. A small sacrifice in these economic times.

"Sabrent Laptop to TV Converter" 2010-03-14
By Mike Dale
This comment is for the "Sabrent PC Laptop Mac Computer to TV Presentation Converter, VGA to Video, PC to TV Converter Box, VGA-Video Converter TV-PC85" only.I received this item on time in a sealed box. The box was missing an s-video cable that was supposed to be included. I had an extra cable at home, so I tried anyway. I followed the instructions and this product NEVER WORKED.
Issues:
1. The menu was difficult to navigate and technology seemed old.
2. So-called "manual" was poorly constructed and difficult to follow.
3. I have a Mitsubishi DLP 60" and the picture was fuzzy with lines on screen.
4. The Sabrent device completely disabled my laptop function key for brightness, sound, etc. It actually took over my laptop functionality and I had to unplug Sabrent device on numerous occasions to decipher the issue.
5. I laughed when I opened the package because the device is so tiny. The Amazon picture makes it look much different.
I purchased this based on Amazon users' experiences. I do not understand how this product received so many good reviews.I'm returning the product for a full refund and will find another way to watch netflix on TV.

"Does not save settings" 2010-03-12
By cliffbhill (Memphis, TN United States)
I bought this to use with my media center pc. Using the S-video out, it has a pretty good picture & has plenty of adjustments. The "manual" is a photocopied, poorly translated pamphlet. It suggests that you should be able to save your settings and power the unit on/off but I was unable to figure it out. Unfortunately it's powered from the usb port of your pc. My solution was to use a wall power adapter that was for charging an old gps through it's usb port.

"It works great, but..." 2010-03-09
By C. Paul (Memphis TN)
All of the 4 and 5 star reviews are right on the money. I purchased this product because there was not a video card that would work with my new Windows 7 desktop and also had an analog TV output. The picture is not great, but it works. Sometimes I get a "wavey" line or the picture does not hold up well when the camera pans, but it is still better than having to buy a HDTV. So long story short: if you can buy a graphics card, do that first. Then, if that does not (or will not) work, buy this converter.

"Does what I need..." 2010-03-03
By Michael Wright (Tallahassee, FL USA)
As long as you understand that an analog TV is never going to match the quality of a digital flat-screen, this little box will most likely meet or exceed your needs. It's not perfect: there are sometimes faint lines, which seem to be a product of re-sizing the video output so it all shows on the television. Analog televisions are usually over-scanned, meaning the edges of the picture extend beyond the edges of the display; this converter lets you adjust the picture size in very small increments so you can see it all. But there is an inevitable loss of quality in doing so. Still, the overall image is about what you would get on an old TV when watching a broadcast signal. I found a slight color tinge which was correctable by adjusting the display device gamma settings - there may be a device profile out there to do that automatically.I use it mostly to watch streaming videos on my old large-screen set. Shows that were originally shot for that medium often still look best seen that way. It's also handy for presentations where fine detail is not important and a good monitor is not available. How to work the controls is not immediately obvious, but once you're familiar with the them, they offer a wide range of flexibility. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the video artifacts. It's inexpensive and gets the job done. Recommended.

This was a used item but works great. Far exceeded the poor converter I originally purchased. No complaints here.

"Product Broke After One Year" 2009-11-10
By A. Thude
We have had this HD converter box for a year now. After only about three months, one button on the remote had completely stopped working...we had not been dropping the remote either. Now, after only one year, our Insignia HD converter box is not working at all and we are having to replace it.I feel that if a gently used product will not last longer than a year, it must be either poorly constructed or designed and will ultimately be a waste of money.

"WORKS WELL" 2009-09-26

This convert works better than any of the other ones I have purchased. Easy to set up and use.

"The best so far!" 2009-09-20
By J. Gonzalez (Oakland, CA)
We went with a cheaper model to begin with and got nowhere. I looked at other reviews on Amazon about this model and took a chance and I am really happy that I did! We get over 50 channels all crisp and clear with the help of an amplified antenna (also bought on Amazon) and we are good to go. We love that we don't have to pay for basic cable for a variety of channels that look great! I highly recommend this converter box to anyone and it might also help for you to use it with an amplified antenna.

"Great Product!" 2009-08-20
By Unknown (Leawood, KS)
I don't normally write reviews but I felt this was good enough to mention. My wife and I have been without TV for several months due to increasing desire to be debt free and decreasing desire to waste time amongst other things. At any rate, we went dark when TV went digital. Then football season started.....so I broke down and decided to buy a converter. I had never even seen one in action prior to this purchase so I didn't know what to expect. I read a lot of reviews on this one and most of them were positive so I gave it a shot. It arrived today and within 5 minutes I was up and running. I really didn't even need the instruction manual but gave it glance anyway. I consider myself moderately savvy with electronics. The setup menu automatically came up when I first turned it on. It was very self explanatory and easy to navigate. I was seriously shocked at how great the picture quality was and how many channels we received (22). The signal strength was also 3/4 full to the "Good" side. In fairness I did buy a digital antenna with a power boost which may or may not make a difference but I assume it does. I highly recommend this converter as an alternative to cable or for regular TV viewing. Great picture, easy to set up and easy to program remote. Hold down power button and push the channel button until the TV turns off. Very simple. Very good quality. Very satisified....

"Beware - No Returns Accepted!!!" 2010-02-21
By Jennifer S. Pritchard (Bay Area, CA)
This is the first time I've ordered something from Amazon that can't be returned, so I missed the fine print about it. Other competing models can be returned, but not this particular item for some reason. I always try to go through Amazon direct or fulfilled by Amazon (if they're at all price competitive) and not the outside Amazon vendors in case I need to return something - was stunned that returns are just flat out not accepted on this item. WHY NOT?!?!?
The unit didn't work for our application, but I guess that's just our tough luck. Bye bye $40!!!
Lesson learned, sure, but it came as a big surprise after not having this come up in 10 years of shopping on Amazon.

"STAY AWAY!" 2010-01-27
By Kirk Mckinley (IN)
When setting up the first unit I received the remote worked for a grand total of TWO clicks. I put a meter on the batteries and they were good but tried brand new batteries just in case and nothing. I contacted cust. service and they cheerfully and promptly sent me a replacement. Got the new one today and I didn't even get one click out of the remote. Nothing! It's going back for something that will actually work.

"Brenda's review" 2010-01-27
By B. Whitney (Brea, CA)
I was hesitant about buying this converter because I'm not great at setting up electronics but I had this setup and working in less than 5 minutes without even looking at the instructions and the picture is excellent. No problems whatsoever and delivery was quick. I would recommend this to anyone needing a converter box.

"Awesome converter box" 2009-12-09
By Shirley L. Scherlin (Chisago City, MN USA)
I read what the other people said about the converter box. And how they had problems and the remote didn't work. We have not had any major problems with this converter box. The size is nice and the remote works great. I would get another if I had too.

"Never !!! Sell or Buy this one." 2010-02-27
By Kyung W. Lee
I'm really disappointed and frustrated with this one. it was wate of my money and time. Also disappointed to amazon.com.I have ordered this on 17th of Feb. and they ship on 21th FEB, delivered 26 FEB. Took unusual 10 days.It only support poor resolution(480x480) in this High definition world. Also the image and text are out of focusing - blurred image.I don't understand about amazon.com selling this kind of poor product and it does not allow return too.If you buy this, it's just waste of money and time.
Thank you!

"It worked... and then it didn't" 2010-02-26
By Vanessa Au
It was great for a few months. It didn't pick up a lot of channels but I guess I wasn't expecting much. What made it unusable was when the sound became all garbled. I tested out the sound on the TV by playing a DVD and the sound was fine so it wasn't an issue with the TV so it must be the converter. The picture would be okay but the sound was just a garbled staticky mess.

"EZ & Simple to Use" 2010-02-24
By David McEldery (Plains, MT USA)
I kind of chuckle when I read reviews by people who don't realize you need antennas if you don't have cable or satellite TV. I'm over 60 and was about 10 years old when we got our first TV. You haven't lived if you haven't endured years of grainy, B&W reception in the 1950s. I couldn't afford a color set until 1980! I limped along on a hand-me-down 1959, 19" B&W Admiral. Remember the old, TV reception term "snow"? Anyway, now that we're above the 1980 poverty level, we have a downstairs satellite-fed, modern set, but upstairs I've still got a 13" color CRT in my office. I don't watch much up there, but used to pick up 4 channels on a bow-tie antenna. A 1902 farm house with chicken wire, lath, and plaster walls isn't conducive to great indoor reception, and for some reason, the bow tie antenna was about the only thing that worked with both UHF and VHF channels. Over the years I accumulated a real collection of both outdoor masts and antennas, boosters, 300 ohm flat lead and 75 ohm converters, so I'm well equipped for antique viewing. I let the analog-digital deadline slip by last year and my coupons expired. So hey, I don't really use the 13" set much, so no big deal, right? Then the Olympics came along, and I wanted to work in the office and maybe listen to the Olympic chatter at the same time, so two days ago I went to amazon for a converter box. I was surprised to see so few offerings. Not much need anymore, I guess. After reading the reviews, I ordered the Zinwell - never heard of them - sounds like "Brand X" to me, but what the heck. It came today and I was amazed at how simple it was to set up and run, right out of the box in about 60 seconds. I was dreading it a bit, because of the un-fun experiences over the years of programming various VCRs and TV sets. You know the drill, the lists in the instruction never have your model number, so you have to walk through various button settings ad infinitum until you find the one that works. And when you upgrade to a different brand gizmo, you go through it all over again. I was loathe to get the converter, because I anticipated this sort of thing. Was I surprised when I got the converter! I didn't even use the instructions - pulled the 300 ohm flat lead to 75 ohm converter off the TV, stuck it on the RF-In on the box, screwed on the included 75 ohm co-ax leads to the box's RF out and TV Input jacks, put batteries in the remote, turned everything on, the TV to channel 3, let it spend a minute or two searching for channels, selected language and time zone, and voila! I was shocked to find that I was picking up 5 network channels and 5 public channels! Since when? The picture quality is vastly improved, and I don't have to constantly dink around turning the antenna for various channels. Yes, you may occasionally have to use two remotes, but I'm used to using 3 or 4. There's always a missing function on the omni-control remotes. The remote is no more flimsy than most others, just small, light, and simple. The converter is small and takes up little space. I'd have given the box 5 stars, but I haven't had it long enough to determine its durability. If you're a TV troglodyte like me, with old, analog CRT sets you can't bear to take to the land-fill, this is the ticket. For those of you bent on acquiring the most energy efficient TV, here's something to consider before tossing the old CRT. The extra heat they give off can warm a small room on a cold winter day, so you don't have to run a heater! I'll probably get one of these boxes for the old 1980 "state of the art" behemoth that now resides in my workshop in the barn so I can watch football while sawing off a finger or two.

"Living off the land, thanks to Zinwell's converter box" 2010-02-22
By Andrew J. Horton (Providence, R.I.)
It's been a while (over 25 years) since I've viewed a television with a broadcast reception. I never quite realized how the major demographic using these converter boxes are seniors. I've been bombarded with ads for scooters, medicare, Life Alert, and the occasional catheter supply warehouse since hooking up the Zinwell converter box.For me, this Zinwell converter box has been a blast from the past. I get all channels in my broadcast area with ease, but I need the help of an antenna to get most of them. I get HD reception for most channels; however, since I'm not a fancy pants like most people my age, high definition can wait. This Zinwell box has the option to convert the picture to either 4:3 pan & scan or 4:3 letterbox. For sports, shows, and movies on HD stations, we do the letterbox. You will need an antenna for this box. It's easy to use, but the buttons on the box feel like they're going to either fall out or stop working with repeated use. The remote is standard issue. I've heard complaints about the remote build quality, but I haven't endured any problems with it.What I don't miss is paying $50 a month for basic cable. I am essentially living off the land while my friends pay $50-$100 a month for cable or fiber optics. That to me is satisfying and worth the price of Zinwell's admission to TV land.

"Worthwhile Product." 2010-02-21
By John Ingram (Austin, TX, US)
The converter arrived early, was easy to hook up without reading the manual, setup required a little reading. Using the converter is better than the Apex unit it replaces. The features are great, especially the ability to use the unit as a programmable tuner for my old VCR. The video seems less sharp than the Apex unit's. The Zinwell is running much cooler than the Apex. I'm hoping this means it will last longer. I'm well pleased with this purchase.
